The Upward Basketball league is open to children Age 5 – Grade 6. Registration is in the fall each year with Team practices beginning in November or December. The games are held every Saturday in our gym during the months of January and February. The program closes each year with and Upward Awards Night. The motto for this league is “Every Child is a Winner!” . It is a Christian based athletic program where the children are taught the basics of basketball while learning Bible verses and good sportsmanship. It is a competitive league with an edge ~ it uses a rotation system so that every child gets to play the same amount of time in each game regardless of athletic ability. The coaches and referees all strive to teach the children during the practices and then again during the actual games. It is not uncommon to see a referee spending time with a child to teach them to dribble, shoot the ball, or play defense during the games. A devotional is given during the halftime of each game played. The participants are awarded stars for learning their Bible verses. These stars are then worn proudly on the sleeve of their uniforms. Within the Upward program, there is also the opportunity for girls who want to be cheerleaders rather than play basketball. The cheerleaders actually cheer and do special numbers during the Saturday games.
